Joseph Carrisales, 48, was found deceased following a severe hailstorm in Greeley, with the Weld County coroner’s report attributing his death to alcohol-related hypothermia.
The report indicates that Carrisales succumbed to complications from hypothermia caused by being intoxicated and exposed to the elements overnight after the storm.
Chronic alcohol abuse played a notable role, and his death has been classified as an accident.
Carrisales was discovered on May 28 outside a friend’s residence near 24th Street and 8th Avenue, amidst significant hail and flooding.
According to his family, Carrisales was with friends when the storm hit, and his companions assumed he was heading home while they took shelter.
Carrisales was celebrated for his passion for barbecue, music, and family. His sister, Irene Carrisales, emphasized his vibrant life beyond the tragic circumstances of his death, stating, “He’s more than a dead man found.
His name is Joseph. We don’t want him to be remembered only for this tragedy, as there was so much more to him.”
The storm prompted a local disaster declaration from the City of Greeley, resulting in over $1.45 million in damage.
During the storm, the city fielded 71 service calls over four hours, with assistance from Greeley, Platte Valley, Evans, and Windsor agencies, who managed 47 calls and performed 10 rescues, according to a city spokeswoman.
