Gun violence has struck a Texas family for the second time in under a decade, officials report.
Authorities in Houston believe that 13-year-old Justin Hardeway Jr. was the target of a deliberate attack when multiple gunshots were fired through his bedroom window, hitting him several times.
The incident occurred around 1 a.m. on July 11, when a man fired from outside the apartment building. The shooter fled before the police arrived, according to Assistant Chief Adrian Rodriguez.
Family members identified the victim as Justin Hardeway Jr., known affectionately as “JJ” or “Lil Justo,” reports KRIV and KTRK. The teenager was quickly transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Described in his obituary as having “the most beautiful smile to melt any heart,” Justin was remembered for his quiet demeanor and impactful presence when he spoke.
This tragic event mirrors a similar loss the family faced seven years earlier, when Justin Hardeway Sr. was shot and killed in May 2017. Despite identifying suspects in both cases, no arrests or charges have been made for either the father or son’s deaths.
A video of the suspect in Hardeway Sr.’s case has been available on the Houston police’s YouTube channel since 2017.
According to the Gun Violence Archive, Houston has seen 19 teenage fatalities due to shootings this year.
