A 21-year-old man from Holsworthy, Devon, tragically drowned after being caught in a rip current. The unfortunate death of Jack Edward Lees occurred last month when he encountered difficulties off Northcott Mouth near Bude.
On Tuesday, June 4, the swimmer went missing in the sea, prompting the Bude Coastguard Rescue Team to be dispatched at 9:24 p.m. Reports indicated individuals were struggling north of Northcott Mouth.
While two women managed to return to shore, Jack remained in the water. Coastguard teams, lifeboats, and drone units conducted an extensive search through the night and into the next day, Wednesday, June 5, but were unable to locate him.
Despite their relentless efforts, Jack was not found immediately. It was only on Tuesday, June 18, that a body was discovered in the Crackington Haven area.
An inquest into his death commenced on June 26, but has since been adjourned. A complete hearing to determine the circumstances surrounding his death will be scheduled at a future date.
In light of this tragedy, the coastguard has emphasized the importance of recognizing rip currents and responding effectively if caught in one. The Bude Coastguard Rescue Team expressed their condolences on Facebook, stating: “Unfortunately, despite an exhaustive search, the missing male was not located at the time. Our thoughts continue to be with his family and friends.”
