A tragic incident occurred at the Mormon Island State Recreation Area in Grand Island, Nebraska, where a semi-truck overturned and ended up in the water, resulting in the death of the driver, Verlin Hunt, a 69-year-old resident of Battlefield, Missouri.
The accident took place around 5:40 p.m. when Hunt’s truck veered off the interstate just east of the Grand Island interchange. Preliminary reports indicate that the truck, traveling eastbound on I-80, crossed all lanes of traffic, plunged down a steep embankment, and ended up in the lake.
Upon arrival, deputies found Hunt inside the truck and began life-saving efforts, but he was soon declared deceased. The Nebraska State Patrol noted that weather conditions did not appear to be a factor in the crash, and alcohol is not suspected to have played a role. Hunt was reportedly wearing a seatbelt at the time.
Emergency responders from the Hall County Sheriff’s Office, Grand Island Fire Department, Doniphan Fire, Nebraska State Patrol, and Nebraska Games & Parks were at the scene, along with a Southern Power crew addressing a damaged power line. An accident reconstruction team is continuing the investigation.
The crash also caused diesel to spill into the lake, prompting an environmental cleanup team to manage the contamination. As a precaution, Lake 1 and the beach at Mormon Island SRA are temporarily closed.
