Fatal Highway 401 crash death of Manivannan and Mahalakshmi – Obituary

Earlier this week, a tragic wrong-way collision on Highway 401 claimed the lives of 60-year-old Manivannan and 55-year-old Mahalakshmi, along with their three-month-old grandchild.

The Consulate General of India in Toronto confirmed their identities and extended condolences on social media.

The consulate expressed their sorrow, stating, “Heartfelt condolences on the tragic loss of Indian nationals Mr. Manivannan, Mrs. Mahalakshmi, and their grandchild in the Highway 401 collision.”

The consul general visited the family at the hospital, pledging support and coordination with Canadian authorities.

The accident occurred on Monday in Whitby when the three-month-old infant and his grandparents were traveling eastbound on Highway 401 in a Nissan Sentra.

This crash happened amid a high-speed police pursuit of a suspect cargo van traveling in the wrong direction on the eastbound lanes.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is currently reviewing the incident, which began at an LCBO store in Bowmanville, where Durham police responded to a robbery. The suspect fled, leading to a chase through several streets and onto Highway 401.

The SIU reported that the infant’s parents, also in the Sentra, were hospitalized for injuries.

The 21-year-old driver of the cargo van was pronounced dead at the scene, and a 38-year-old passenger was seriously injured and taken to the hospital.

Durham Regional Police are under scrutiny for their pursuit of the suspect vehicle, as many question the decision to chase a vehicle traveling the wrong way on the highway.

In response, Durham police stated they are fully cooperating with the SIU’s investigation, which includes seven investigators, a forensic investigator, and a collision reconstructionist.
