The Allen County Coroner has identified the man involved in the officer-involved shooting that occurred on Tuesday in Fort Wayne. Gawon Kaerey Benson, 31, was shot and killed by a police officer.
The incident has been classified as a ‘Homicide-Police Action,’ and the investigation is ongoing. The involved officer is currently on leave.
On July 30, 2024, the Allen County Coroner’s Office was alerted to a shooting on West Campus Drive at the University of Purdue Fort Wayne. First responders declared Benson dead at the scene.
The autopsy revealed that Benson died from multiple gunshot wounds, and the death was deemed a homicide resulting from police action.
Gawon Kaerey Benson is the 22nd recorded death in Allen County this year. The shooting is under investigation by multiple agencies, including the Fort Wayne Police Department, Indiana State Police, Purdue Fort Wayne Police Department, Allen County Prosecutor’s Office, and the Allen County Coroner’s Office.

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – According to the Fort Wayne Police Department, an officer-involved shooting at Purdue University Fort Wayne resulted in the death of a suspect. The campus was closed following the incident that occurred on Tuesday morning.
DeKalb County Community Corrections had notified police that a man who had failed to return to custody might be on campus. Police located the man, who was armed and did not comply with commands. Officers fired shots, striking the man, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Fort Wayne Police Department detailed that DeKalb County Community Corrections called at approximately 7:17 am to request assistance in locating a violator who had not returned to custody and was possibly armed. The suspect was eventually found on the PFW campus by officers from both PFW and Fort Wayne Police. Despite being instructed to comply, the suspect did not follow orders and was armed. Officers fired, and the suspect was hit. Medical aid was administered by officers until paramedics arrived and continued treatment, but the suspect was declared deceased.
The investigation is ongoing, with the Fort Wayne Police Department, Purdue Fort Wayne Police Department, Allen County Coroner’s Office, and Allen County Prosecutor’s Office involved. The Indiana State Police will also conduct a separate investigation.
