The victim of a tragic kayak accident that occurred over the weekend at Hammond Lake in Tioga County, Pennsylvania, has been identified as 16-year-old Rylan T. Weiler from Manheim, Pennsylvania.
According to Tioga County Coroner James Daugherty, Weiler’s death has been confirmed as an accidental drowning.
On Saturday morning around 9 a.m., multiple fire departments responded to Ives Run Lane within the Tioga-Hammond Lakes Recreation Area following a report of a missing kayaker, as stated by the Middlebury Township Volunteer Fire Department. Early reports suggested that the individual might have become trapped beneath the water.
The situation prompted a seven-hour search effort involving several agencies, including those from neighboring Steuben and Lycoming counties, before Weiler’s body was ultimately found.
Weiler, who had recently graduated from Oak Lane Mennonite School, was working as a builder, as noted in his obituary. The Tioga-Hammond Lakes Recreation Area is managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
