Fatal Tybee Island swimming incident claims the life of Laquvis McCray – Obituary
The body of Laquvis McCray, a missing teenager, was recovered by the Chatham County Police Department’s dive team after he disappeared late Friday morning while swimming. The tragic event unfolded around 11 a.m. when officers from the Tybee Island Police Department responded to reports of swimmers in distress in the “Back River” area.
Witnesses reported that a family observed their two 16-year-olds struggling in the water. While beachgoers assisted in rescuing one teen, Laquvis McCray was last seen vanishing beneath the waves.
In response to the emergency, Tybee Island police and lifeguards enlisted help from the United States Coast Guard, Chatham County Marine Patrol, and the Marine Rescue Squadron to conduct a search.
“The hearts of the Tybee Island Police Department and the entire City of Tybee remain with the family during this difficult time,” the department shared on Facebook.
On Saturday, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources identified the 16-year-old as Laquvis McCray from Atlanta. Officials stated that around 11:45 a.m. on July 5, they were notified that three individuals had gone underwater, with two being rescued. Laquvis McCray’s body was recovered around 3:30 p.m.
