Fatal Chicopee car crash death of James Menard – Obituary
A two-car accident late Thursday night on Memorial Drive has claimed the life of James Menard, a 59-year-old resident of Chicopee, as confirmed by local authorities.
Chicopee Police responded to the scene at 11:25 p.m. near the intersection of Memorial Drive and Jamrog Drive, where they found two vehicles had collided in a severe crash.
James Menard, the driver of one of the vehicles, was rushed to Baystate Medical Center in critical condition but sadly passed away from his injuries on Friday.
The driver of the second vehicle, 37-year-old Andrew Wilkins from Springfield, was arrested at the scene. He faces charges including operating under the influence of alcohol causing serious injury, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, leaving the scene of personal injury, and speeding.
Wilkins was arraigned in Chicopee District Court on July 26, with bail set at $7,500. As a condition of his release, he must wear an alcohol monitoring device. His next court date is scheduled for September 12.
The Chicopee Police Department, in collaboration with the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit and the Hampden District Attorney’s Office Motor Vehicle Homicide Unit, is continuing the investigation into the crash.
Hampden District Attorney Anthony Gulluni extended his sympathies to Menard’s family during this tragic time.
