WREG has obtained further details about the tragic incident on Friday morning that resulted in the death of 22-year-old Rantavious Johnson. Veronica Johnson, Rantavious’s grandmother, revealed that they had shared a photo together before he departed in her vehicle. Less than three hours later, she was informed of his shooting.
Veronica recounted the moment Memphis Police arrived at her home to deliver the devastating news. “As soon as I opened the door, two officers were there to tell us he didn’t make it,” Veronica said. “I had just gotten my hair cut, and he said, ‘Oh grandma, your hair looks so pretty, let’s take a selfie.’ We took the photo at around 12:06 a.m., and by about one o’clock, he was gone.”
The investigation into the collision and shooting that resulted in two fatalities is ongoing. A memorial for Officer Demetrice Johnson, who also perished in the crash, has been established at the North Main Police Station.
On Saturday, Memphis Mayor Paul Young commented on the dangerous nature of police work. “Our officers face significant risks, dealing with both gunfire and unpredictable driving,” Young stated.
Rantavious is survived by a young child who will celebrate their second birthday in October. Veronica expressed her sorrow over the loss and the impact on the child. “He adored that baby, and now the child will only have pictures to remember him by,” she said. “I’m deeply sorry for the Johnson family and this tragic situation. Whether Rantavious collided with them or vice versa, it’s a heartbreaking accident and I deeply regret that he lost his life.”
The family is scheduled to meet with homicide detectives on Sunday to discuss the case further.
