Fatal Port St. Lucie hit-and-run death of Gardy Petit-Frere – Obituary
Port St. Lucie police have identified the moped rider killed in a hit-and-run late Friday night as 37-year-old Gardy Petit-Frere. Petit-Frere, a local resident, was riding his moped near the intersection of Southwest Airoso Boulevard and Southwest Todd Avenue around 11:15 p.m. when he was struck by a GMC pickup truck. The driver fled the scene, leaving Petit-Frere critically injured.
Authorities have located the vehicle they believe was involved in the deadly incident, finding it approximately 10 blocks away from the crash site. According to Port St. Lucie Police Chief Richard Del Toro, the truck was initially parked at the suspect’s home before being moved to a neighbor’s driveway the following morning. Although a suspect has been identified, no arrests have been made at this time.
Petit-Frere was rushed to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. Family members, too grief-stricken to speak on camera, shared photos of Gardy with WPTV’s Jon Shainman. They described him as the youngest and kindest of eight siblings, a dedicated worker who was on his way to his overnight shift at FedEx when the tragedy occurred. In a heartbreaking twist, Petit-Frere was killed on the day he would have celebrated his 37th birthday.
This incident marks the seventh traffic-related fatality in Port St. Lucie this year. Authorities urge anyone with information about the crash to contact Traffic Homicide Investigator S. Tomczyk at 772-871-5001 or Treasure Coast Crime Stoppers at 1-800-273-8477.
