A birthday celebration in Durham County took a tragic turn on Friday night when an event turned into a crime scene, believed to be the result of a murder-suicide.
The Durham County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident, which occurred at a residence on Edsel Road in the Lebanon area shortly after 10:30 p.m.
The two deceased individuals have been identified as 59-year-old Alton Antonio Wall and 62-year-old Gregory Lee. Initial findings and statements from witnesses suggest that Wall fatally shot Lee before turning the weapon on himself. The NC Medical Examiner will determine the official causes of death, but preliminary investigations suggest that no charges will be filed in this case based on witness testimony.
Jonathan Kelly Riley, the host of the annual birthday cookout and campout, reported that both Wall and Lee were his cousins. The event, which was attended by nearly 80 people, was marred by Wall’s apparent belief that he was being targeted. Riley recounted that several attendees tried to disarm Wall before he fired two shots, which he heard as he moved away to call for emergency help.
