Fatal Notus train collision claims the lives of Benjamin Maupin and family – Obituary
A Nampa family has been identified as the victims in a tragic train crash that occurred near Notus over the weekend. Benjamin Maupin, 38, was driving a Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck when it collided with a train after he failed to yield while crossing a railroad along a private road, according to a county news release. The passengers were his wife, Kapri Maupin, 35, and their two children, Kayden Maupin, 17, and Ryder Maupin, 11.
“This incident underscores the critical importance of following traffic laws and exercising caution at railway crossings,” stated Canyon County Coroner Jennifer Crawford in the release. “Our deepest sympathies go out to the families and loved ones impacted by this devastating loss.”
Benjamin and Kapri were married and, according to property records, owned the Mint Barrel Barn, a historic venue on West McMillan Road near Star, which hosted weddings and private events for up to 200 people.
A post on the business’s website confirmed that Kayden and Ryder were the Maupins’ children.
“Through years of dedication, planning, and hard work, they transformed the barn into what it is today,” wrote Reina Corona, the event manager for the business. “Our hearts are shattered, and life will never be the same.”
Photos and videos shared on the Maupins’ Facebook accounts show the family enjoying time in Notus as recently as last month. They were pictured riding all-terrain vehicles and snowmobiles, hunting, trapping, and participating in cattle branding. Benjamin’s account indicated he was originally from Homedale, and the couple had been married since September 2011.
The crash occurred at around 8:20 a.m. on April 13, near U.S. Highway 20 at milepost 17.
As of Tuesday, Idaho State Police are continuing to investigate the incident.
Funeral arrangements have yet to be announced.
