Fatal Morristown swimming accident death of Benjamin Clapp – Obituary
The body of Benjamin Clapp, a 14-year-old student from Morristown, Vermont, was found in the Lamoille River following an extensive search. The Morristown Police Department received an alert at approximately 5:51 p.m. on Wednesday about a missing swimmer near the B Street power dam.
Benjamin, a ninth-grader at Peoples Academy, was reported missing after he and another individual were seen swimming and jumping off rocks downstream from the dam. A bystander noticed him struggling in the water and immediately contacted the authorities.
The Vermont State Police Underwater Recovery Team located Benjamin’s body on Thursday morning around 9:30 a.m.
Morristown Police Chief Jason Luneau noted that the area is not recommended for swimming due to its dangers, especially close to the dam. “This area is known to attract swimmers during the summer, but it’s risky,” he mentioned.
The search for Benjamin had been halted the previous night but resumed early Thursday. Initial findings suggest that his death was accidental, with an autopsy pending to determine the exact cause. Various emergency services, including the Morrisville Fire Department and Stowe Mountain Rescue, assisted in the search efforts.
