Diem Le Nguyen, a hiker, went missing after parting ways with her group at Black Mountain Open Space Park in the Rancho Penasquitos area on Sunday. The following day, authorities discovered the lifeless body of an Asian woman, suspected to be Nguyen, off the trail.
Nguyen, 50, was among a large group of around 100 individuals, including her family and friends, traversing the Nighthawk Trail during a fundraiser for the Build a School Foundation. At a rest point halfway through the hike, she chose to continue to the summit alone, leading to her separation from the group.
A search operation was launched after Nguyen issued a distress call, indicating she was experiencing overheating and required water. A helicopter, engaged in the search, located the deceased woman just a quarter mile from a more populated area. Authorities are currently awaiting autopsy results to verify the identity of the body.
