Fatal Santa Fe shooting death of Zachary Ryan Babitz – Obituary
Santa Fe police have identified 38-year-old Zachary Ryan Babitz as the prime suspect in the fatal shooting of 83-year-old Gordon Peter Wilson outside a Best Buy earlier this week. Authorities reported that Babitz stole Wilson’s 2020 blue Jeep Grand Cherokee and fled the scene.
Friends remember the victim, Wilson, as a ‘gentle’ individual and a scholar. Santa Fe police have since recovered the stolen vehicle at an undisclosed location in Albuquerque and executed at least one search warrant at a residence in the city.
Babitz faces charges of murder, robbery, and unlawful possession of a firearm. He had been released from prison in March and has a lengthy criminal record.
According to police, Babitz, who resides in Edgewood, also has connections to California, Arizona, and Nevada. He is described as 5 feet 8 inches tall, weighing around 200 pounds, bald, with hazel eyes, and adorned with numerous tattoos on his neck and body. The last sighting of him was in black jeans, a bright blue shirt with a button-up shirt underneath, and a white baseball cap.
