During the standoff, Elkins reportedly fired at officers, prompting them to return fire, which resulted in his death. Upon completion, the findings will be submitted to the Etowah County district attorney for further consideration.

Authorities formally identified Elkins on Thursday. He was a resident of Mount Dora, Florida, located approximately 30 miles from Orlando.
