Ivan Zaystev, who was 41, died following a confrontation with law enforcement officers on July 2 in Spanaway. The Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office has confirmed that Zaystev, who was shot multiple times, was the victim of a homicide near the intersection of 205th Street East and 5th Avenue Court East. According to reports, Zaystev initially fired at a trooper who had attempted to pull him over for a traffic infraction, and continued to shoot at officers who were called in to assist with the pursuit. The Pierce County Force Investigation Team, which has taken over the case, detailed that the traffic stop began around 10:16 a.m. on state Route 512 near Steele Street. A trooper and a Pierce County deputy continued to chase Zaystev’s vehicle after it was spotted near the 19000 block of state Route 7, leading them south on the highway. The chase concluded in a residential area off state Route 507. Some inconsistencies were noted between the initial traffic-stop information and later updates provided on the evening of July 2.
