Fatal Lower Plenty stabbing death of Joanne Perry – Obituary
Joanne Perry, aged 53, lost her life on Friday evening after being repeatedly stabbed by her daughter, who also attempted to set her on fire, as reported by the Herald Sun.
Emergency services were summoned to Kett St in Lower Plenty around 6:30 p.m. on Friday following reports that a 26-year-old woman was trying to ignite her mother. Upon their arrival, officers encountered the young woman, who was armed with a knife and was aggressively attacking her mother.
Despite commands to drop the weapon, the 26-year-old continued her assault on Joanne Perry, stabbing her multiple times in the chest and neck. In response to the escalating threat, a police officer discharged his weapon, resulting in the young woman’s death at the scene.
At the time, the 26-year-old was out on bail for a separate case. Victoria Police Acting Superintendent Scott Colson stated that the officer had no choice but to use force in this dire situation.
“It’s a tragic event,” Colson noted. “Our officers are not prepared for such circumstances and do not expect to be involved in these kinds of incidents.”
Colson expressed that he supported the officer’s actions given the circumstances, explaining that police had instructed the daughter to drop the knife, but she continued to attack her mother. “Tragically, both the mother and the daughter lost their lives at the scene,” he said.
