Bhim Kohli, an 80-year-old man, has been identified as the victim of a tragic attack at a park in Leicestershire.
Kohli, a father of three and grandfather of two, was assaulted in Franklin Park, Braunstone Town, around 6:30 pm on Sunday.
He later succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. The incident reportedly occurred near the park entrance on Bramble Way.
Kohli was walking his dog just moments away from his home when the attack took place. Witnesses have reported that the assailants were a group of young individuals who fled before emergency services arrived.
Police have since arrested a 14-year-old boy and girl, as well as three 12-year-olds, in connection with the murder.
Deep Kaila, a neighbor of Kohli’s for 35 years, described him as a healthy, active man who enjoyed tending to his allotment.
Kohli had previously run a factory in Leicester making jumpers and cardigans before retiring. His family, including his wife, sons Baul and Varinder, and daughter Susan, are deeply grieving his loss.
Detective Inspector Emma Matts of Leicestershire Police stated that the case has escalated to a murder investigation. Authorities are urging anyone with information about the attack or who was in the area around the time of the incident to come forward.
Meanwhile, a scene preservation remains in effect at the park, and local officers are conducting reassurance patrols.
In light of previous interactions between the police and the victim, a voluntary referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has been made. The IOPC will review the situation to determine if further action is needed.
