Botham Jean was shot and killed by former Dallas police officer Amber Guyger on September 6, 2018, while he was at home. Guyger mistakenly entered Jean’s apartment, believing it was her own, and shot the 26-year-old who was eating ice cream at the time. In October 2019, Guyger was convicted of murder and sentenced to ten years in prison.
Now eligible for parole, Jean’s family is urging the parole board to deny her early release. His sister, Allisa Charles-Findley, emphasized that the family continues to live with the pain of losing Botham and believes Guyger should serve her full sentence. They plan to voice their opposition to her parole in upcoming hearings, expressing that forgiveness should not exempt her from the consequences of her actions.
While Jean’s brother Brandt publicly forgave Guyger during her sentencing, his sister feels that true accountability has yet to be achieved. She has petitioned the U.S. Department of Justice to investigate the case further, affirming that Jean was an innocent man who deserved to live peacefully in his own home. The projected release date for Guyger, if she is not paroled, is September 29, 2029.
