Michael Rosario, 32, was shot and killed on Friday afternoon at an H-E-B in northeast Austin. The incident occurred after a security guard attempted to remove Rosario from the store following a trespassing call. According to police, Rosario displayed a knife and used a hubcap as a shield before charging at the guard. The security guard initially tried to subdue him with a Taser, but when it failed, the guard shot Rosario, who later died at the hospital.
The investigation into Rosario’s death, which is the 47th homicide in Austin for 2024, is ongoing, and no charges have been filed against the security guard. Shoppers at the scene described confusion and fear during the incident, with some initially mistaking the gunfire for construction noise.
