Jayden Chase, the driver accused of causing a deadly crash during a picket line in Jackson, Michigan, was arraigned on September 30, 2024. Chase, 23, faces a charge of operating while intoxicated causing death after his truck collided with striking workers from Eaton Aerospace late Saturday night. The incident occurred around 11:20 p.m. at the intersection of East Michigan and South East avenues, resulting in the death of 24-year-old Seth Webb.
Witnesses reported that five picketers were struck by Chase’s Ford F-250, with Webb suffering fatal injuries shortly after being transported to Henry Ford Jackson Hospital. While Webb died, four other workers sustained injuries, including two who were critically hurt. The police indicated that Chase’s preliminary breath test showed he was significantly above the legal alcohol limit.
During the arraignment, Chase appeared indifferent as he acknowledged the serious charge and stated he would hire his own attorney. His bond was set at $25,000, and a probable cause conference is scheduled for October 11. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities looking into the possibility of additional charges, including reckless driving.
Chase’s truck reportedly sped east on East Michigan Avenue before losing control and crashing into the group of picketers. While no evidence suggests the crash was intentional, investigators are also examining reports that he may have been racing another vehicle at the time.
The United Auto Workers (UAW) Local 475 members have been on strike against Eaton Aerospace since September 16, following the expiration of their contract. Following the tragic event, over 100 people gathered at the crash site for a candlelight vigil in Webb’s memory, paying tribute with flowers and personal items. Friends described Webb as a friendly and skilled technician, known for his talent in fixing electronics. The union plans to continue its strike despite the recent tragedy.
