Authorities have confirmed the identity of a pedestrian who tragically lost his life in a car accident in Yuba City. The victim, 72-year-old Thomas Steven Waicunas Jr., was struck by a vehicle on Monday evening, according to the Sutter County Sheriff-Coroner’s Office. It was reported that Waicunas was homeless at the time of the incident.
The collision occurred near the intersection of Bridge and Plumas streets around 8 p.m., but Yuba City police have not provided further details regarding the circumstances of the accident.
In a separate incident, Isabel Blanco Vasquez, a 26-year-old woman, was killed early Tuesday when the car she was a passenger in overturned near Lincoln. The Placer County Sheriff-Coroner’s office identified Vasquez, who was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, which happened around 1:20 a.m. as the vehicle veered off the road and flipped over.
The California Highway Patrol reported that the driver of the vehicle, 26-year-old William Bryan Cubias-Martinez from Marysville, was hospitalized for injuries sustained in the accident. He is expected to be booked at the Placer County Jail on charges of suspected drunken driving once he is discharged. A GoFundMe page has been set up to assist with funeral expenses for Vasquez, indicating she has family in Yuba City.
