Fatal Sumner County car crash deaths of Ernestina Eumana-Alverez and Christian Gutierrez – Obituary
A devastating accident on Interstate 35 in Sumner County, Kansas, shortly after midnight on Thursday claimed the lives of 58-year-old Ernestina Eumana-Alverez and an infant, Christian Gutierrez. The crash occurred in the southbound lanes, just south of Wichita.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, a 2020 Chevrolet Express van pulling a trailer overturned, blocking the highway. A 63-year-old man driving a 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee attempted to avoid the overturned van but collided with it.
Nine individuals, eight from Minnesota, were in the van at the time. Tragically, Eumana-Alverez and the unrestrained infant were pronounced dead at the scene. Five other occupants of the van sustained serious injuries, while two, including a 1-year-old, suffered minor injuries.
The driver of the Jeep and two passengers were treated for minor injuries.
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
