Authorities have identified 45-year-old Derrick Wardle as the suspect fatally shot by Colorado Springs police on February 15. The incident took place just before 5 p.m. on Illinois Avenue, near East Fillmore Street and North Hancock Avenue, following reports of a family disturbance involving a firearm.
According to police, a woman reported an altercation between her son and grandson, during which her son allegedly threatened to shoot officers. While two individuals managed to escape the residence, another person remained inside with the armed suspect.
When officers attempted to make contact, Wardle reportedly raised his gun toward them. In response, two officers fired at least once, striking him. He was pronounced dead at the scene. No other individuals were injured.
As per department protocol, the officers involved have been placed on paid administrative leave. The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office is conducting an investigation, and the Fourth Judicial District Attorney’s Office will determine whether the use of force was justified.
