Luis Cruz dies in fatal Brooklyn e-bike collision
Fatal Brooklyn e-bike collision death of Luis Cruz – Obituary
Luis Cruz, a 49-year-old man, was tragically killed on Friday night in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, after being struck by a delivery worker on an e-bike who failed to stop at a stop sign. The incident occurred around 7:40 p.m. at the intersection of Franklin and India streets.
According to witnesses, Cruz had double-parked and was exiting his car when the e-bike rider, reportedly rushing to deliver food, collided with him. Jack Collins, a nearby restaurant worker, said Cruz died at the scene. Collins also mentioned that e-bikes can reach speeds of up to 30 miles per hour, making the crash devastating.
The delivery rider remained at the scene, but no arrests have been made as the investigation continues. Local restaurant workers expressed concerns about the high volume of delivery workers in the area, with many running stop signs due to the location of traffic lights.
City lawmakers have raised concerns for years about e-bike safety and have called for stricter regulations, although e-bike-related accidents remain a relatively small percentage of overall traffic deaths and injuries in the city.
