Authorities have identified the police officer involved in the shooting that resulted in the death of a Wheaton man on Saturday, September 21, as a 12-year veteran of the Montgomery County Police Department.
Officers were dispatched to the 3400 block of Janet Road at approximately 7:49 p.m. following reports of an assault in progress. Upon arrival, an officer encountered a man in the yard who was holding an object. Despite multiple commands from the officer, the man did not comply.
As per official reports, the man advanced toward the officer and the individuals he had allegedly assaulted. In response, the officer discharged his weapon, striking the man.
The individual, later confirmed to be 31-year-old Melvin Omar Chavez-Paz from Wheaton, was pronounced dead at the scene after attempts to revive him were unsuccessful. Although a knife was not found, a grill fork was located near Chavez-Paz’s body.
The officer involved in the incident has been named Corporal Cody Hobbs, a member of the Patrol Services Bureau with 12 years of service.
The Independent Investigations Division is actively probing the circumstances surrounding the officer-involved shooting.
In a statement, CASA expressed its commitment to supporting Chavez-Paz’s family, stating, “CASA is assisting the Chavez family with immediate services and humanitarian aid following Saturday’s incident. Their primary concern is to ensure the dignified return of their nephew for burial, in accordance with his mother’s wishes. The family requests privacy during this difficult time.”
