Fatal Wheaton shooting death of Melvin Omar Chavez-Paz – Obituary.
The Maryland Attorney General’s Office has identified Melvin Omar Chavez-Paz, a 31-year-old resident of Wheaton, who was shot and killed by a county police officer. The officer involved, Cpl. Cody Hobbs, has been with the police department for 12 years and is currently assigned to the Patrol Services Bureau.
Initial reports indicate that on Saturday at approximately 7:45 p.m., county police were dispatched to the 3400 block of Janet Road following reports of an ongoing assault. Upon arrival, officers found Chavez-Paz in a yard, reportedly holding an object. Despite commands to “drop the knife,” he did not comply and began moving across the street. Cpl. Hobbs then discharged his service weapon, fatally wounding Chavez-Paz as he approached Hobbs and individuals he had allegedly assaulted earlier.
The Independent Investigations Division of the state Attorney General’s Office is actively conducting an investigation into the incident.
