Residents in Sacramento were left reeling after the tragic death of a 12-year-old boy due to a shooting in their neighborhood. The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office has identified the victim as Santino Joseph Contreras.
One long-time local family expressed that this is the most shocking incident they have experienced in nearly five decades of living in the area. Debbie Stephens, a nearby resident, described the frightening moment when she heard loud bangs that she initially thought were just noises from her home.
On Saturday evening, while preparing dinner, Stephens recalled hearing several gunshots outside her house on 22nd Street in the Meadowview area of Sacramento. One of the bullets even struck a window in her garage. In a state of panic, her mother called 911, and they stayed inside until authorities arrived.
Stephens reported witnessing the boy lying on the sidewalk just steps away from her front door. “I saw them working on someone on the ground. At first, I had no idea it was a 12-year-old. When we learned it was a young boy, it broke our hearts. It’s devastating to see such a young life lost, and it left us shaken for the rest of the night,” she shared.
According to the Sacramento police, they arrived at the scene shortly after 6 p.m. and discovered the boy suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite efforts to save him, he unfortunately died from his injuries.
“It’s just really heartbreaking. He never got a chance to enjoy his teenage years. We don’t know if he was a victim of circumstance or if he was targeted, perhaps due to gang activity,” Stephens noted.
The community is now on edge, hoping that law enforcement can swiftly identify the person responsible for the shooting. “There’s a lingering fear because if this could happen once, it could happen again. If it can happen to one child, it can happen to anyone,” she added.
While ABC10 inquired whether the boy might have had any gang connections, police have not confirmed any such information. Currently, there is no identified suspect or description available, but police are urging anyone with information to come forward to assist in the investigation.
