Fatal San Jose shooting death of Regulus “Regis” Teotico – Obituary

A 45-year-old veteran bus driver, Regulus “Regis” Teotico, has been identified as the victim in a shooting that took place at a VTA facility in San Jose. Teotico had worked for the VTA for a decade before his tragic death.

Authorities are continuing their investigation into the incident, which left Teotico dead and another VTA employee, 33-year-old Duc Bui, facing charges of murder. The shooting occurred at the Chaboya VTA yard on Friday evening, shortly before 10 p.m.

VTA CEO Carolyn Gonot expressed her condolences, stating, “Regis was a kind and hardworking individual, a dedicated father of two teenagers. Our hearts go out to his family and friends during this difficult time.”

According to investigators, Bui, also a bus driver, had a personal relationship with Teotico. Captain Sugey Jaimez of the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office mentioned that both men shared activities outside of work, with the suspected motive behind the shooting being a financial dispute related to betting. The ongoing investigation suggests the conflict had no ties to their workplace.

Teotico’s death is not the first fatal incident at a VTA facility. In 2021, nine VTA employees were tragically killed in a separate shooting carried out by a disgruntled mechanic.

Santa Clara County Supervisor Cindy Chavez acknowledged the emotional toll this latest incident has taken, noting, “For many, this brings back the trauma of a previous tragedy.”

Unlike the 2021 event, investigators report that Bui did not display any warning signs and had no prior interactions with law enforcement. As a precaution, the sheriff’s office will be enhancing security across VTA locations.

Bui’s first court appearance is scheduled for September 25. Sheriff Bob Jonsen described the crime as senseless, while acknowledging the profound impact it has had on the VTA community.

In response to the tragedy, grief counseling services are being made available to VTA employees.
