Amiel Maerling dies in fatal Goshen car crash
Fatal Goshen car crash death of Amiel Maerling – Obituary
Amiel Maerling, 32, from Greenfield Park, has been identified as the victim in a deadly crash on Wednesday night on State Route 17 in Goshen.
Authorities reported that around 10:05 p.m., Orange County 911 received calls about a vehicle traveling in the wrong direction, heading east in the westbound lanes of State Route 17. Maerling, driving a Ford F-150 pickup truck, was believed to have entered from Sullivan County.
As the truck passed a Middletown Police officer near Exits 119 and 118, the officer attempted to intervene but was unable to stop the vehicle. A State Trooper also attempted to stop the truck after spotting it between Exits 120 and 119, but Maerling continued east at high speed.
Near Exit 122, Maerling’s vehicle collided head-on with a 2020 International tractor-trailer. Both vehicles caught fire, and Maerling was declared dead at the scene. The tractor-trailer driver suffered serious injuries and was transported to Garnet Medical Center.
Efforts to stop the wrong-way driver involved the Middletown Police, Wallkill Town Police, and the Orange County Sheriff’s Office. An investigation is ongoing.
