Dempsey Chevoit Smith, a 40-year-old resident of Birmingham, has been identified as the man found deceased in a wooded area of east Birmingham. His body was discovered in a state of decomposition around 8:15 a.m. on September 26, 2024, in the 3000 block of Jefferson State Parkway. A passerby reported the grim find to a Jefferson County deputy, prompting a police investigation. Initially classified as unclassified, an autopsy later revealed that Smith had suffered gunshot wounds. Although he was not reported missing, his family had been searching for him for several weeks prior to the discovery.
