Authorities have identified the victim of a drowning in Merced County as 34-year-old Jessy Anyelo Gamez-Cabrera from Richmond. The incident occurred on Sunday at the George J. Hatfield State Recreation Area when Gamez-Cabrera entered the Merced River to rescue a struggling juvenile. Witnesses reported that after the juvenile was safely removed from the water, he began to struggle himself and went under without resurfacing.
Emergency response teams, including divers from the Merced County Sheriff’s Office Water Rescue and Recovery Team, located his body within ten minutes in approximately 11 feet of water. Gamez-Cabrera was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities noted that he was visiting friends and family at the park and emphasized the importance of caution when entering the water, recommending that even strong swimmers wear life jackets due to unpredictable river conditions.
