Monte Ray Leidholm dies in fatal Durango pedestrian accident
Fatal Durango pedestrian accident death of Monte Ray Leidholm – Obituary.
Monte Ray Leidholm, a 75-year-old man from Las Cruces, New Mexico, tragically lost his life on Monday night after being struck by a vehicle while crossing north Main Avenue in Durango. The incident occurred around 8:20 p.m. near 21st Street, where Leidholm reportedly stepped into traffic without having the right of way.
According to Commander Nick Stasi of the Durango Police Department, Leidholm was crossing from west to east, moving from the area of Subway to the Adobe Inn. His family informed authorities that he was visiting Durango as a tourist to enjoy the fall colors.
While police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, they did not speculate whether Leidholm intentionally or accidentally entered the roadway. Witnesses indicated that it was dark, and some reported they did not see him step into traffic.
Leidholm was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the vehicle, a 60-year-old man from out of town driving a Hyundai sedan north on Main Avenue, showed no signs of impairment, and speed was not deemed a factor in the accident. No charges are expected to be filed against the driver. Two blocks of Main Avenue were closed for the investigation, causing traffic to be rerouted until shortly before midnight.
