Fatal Santa Fe hit-and-run claims the life of Monique Maes – Obituary
Monique Maes, a 43-year-old woman from Santa Fe, has died after being struck by a vehicle while walking near Paseo Nopal with her two children on Tuesday evening. The driver fled the scene, and officials confirmed her death from the injuries she sustained.
Maes was walking alongside her children, ages 8 and 12, when the tragic incident occurred. Both children were also hit by the vehicle but were treated for their injuries at a local hospital and later released. Witnesses reported seeing the vehicle drive away after the crash.
Later that night, deputies located an abandoned white SUV, believed to be the vehicle involved, a few miles from the crash site. The SUV showed significant front-end damage, but authorities have not yet identified a suspect. Investigators are asking for the public’s help and encouraging anyone with information to come forward.
A friend of the family, Bill Sanchez, expressed the shock and sorrow of Maes’ loved ones, describing her as a beloved member of the community. “She was bright, gregarious, and so loved by many,” he said, adding that her death is a devastating loss.
Authorities continue to investigate and seek more information about the driver involved in the hit-and-run.
