Fatal Johnson County crash death of Benjamin D. Van Buskirk – Obituary
A tragic accident in Johnson County early Saturday morning claimed the life of Benjamin D. Van Buskirk, a Kansas teenager. The crash occurred just before 2 a.m. on Interstate 35, north of Johnson Drive in Merriam.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, a 2010 Jeep Liberty, driven by 21-year-old Joselin M. Laynez Flores from Guatemala, was traveling southbound in the first lane when it collided with a 2007 Chevy Equinox. The Equinox, driven by 25-year-old Paula S. Baird of Kansas City, Kansas, had been stalled due to an earlier incident.
The force of the impact caused the Jeep to veer off course, hitting Van Buskirk, 17, of Olathe. He had crossed multiple lanes of traffic to help, having been a passenger in a 2008 Honda CRV driven by 17-year-old Ammar M. Aljishi from Spring Hill, which was stopped on the highway’s right shoulder.
Van Buskirk was pronounced dead at the scene. His body was taken to Forensic Medical. Baird was transported to KU Medical Center by EMS. Both Laynez Flores and a passenger in the Jeep were unharmed and properly restrained, as reported by the KHP.
