Lucas Knudson dies in fatal Orono, Minn., car crash

Fatal Orono, Minn., car crash death of Lucas Knudson – Obituary.

Lucas Knudson, a 17-year-old Orono High School senior, tragically lost his life Sunday night when his vehicle collided with a light pole at the intersection of Highways 7 and 101 in Minnetonka. The crash, which occurred shortly before 11 p.m., caused the vehicle to catch fire.

Orono Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Amy Steiner shared a heartfelt letter with families, announcing the loss with the permission of Lucas’ parents. Dr. Steiner described Lucas as an exceptional student who began his journey in the district as a kindergartener. He was a standout player on the Orono High varsity basketball team and actively participated in programs like Unified and Letters of Love. Known for his friendly nature and wide range of interests, Lucas left a positive impact on everyone who knew him.

Grief support services have been made available for students and staff, including counseling sessions and designated spaces for mourning. School officials are closely monitoring the needs of the community to provide further resources during this difficult time.

Lucas is survived by his father, Brian Knudson; mother, Renae Rhude-Knudson; and two sisters, Julia and Lauren, who graduated from Orono High School in 2021 and 2023, respectively.

The Orono community is mourning the unexpected loss of a bright young man, and heartfelt condolences go out to Lucas’ family and friends.
