Fatal Fresno County car crash death of Pedro Garcia Velarde – Obituary
The Fresno County Coroner’s Office has identified 44-year-old Pedro Garcia Velarde, a resident of Kerman, as the victim of a deadly car collision that occurred on November 22 in Fresno County.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident took place near the intersection of Highway 180 and Grantland Avenue just before 6:20 p.m. Velarde was driving a Kia Optima eastbound on Highway 180 with two 14-year-old passengers when a westbound pickup truck driven by 56-year-old Santiago Lopez Lucas crossed into oncoming traffic and collided with the Kia.
Velarde was pronounced dead at the scene. The two teenage passengers sustained minor injuries and were taken to the hospital for treatment.
Lucas, who suffered minor injuries, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, DUI causing death, and vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated. He was released on Sunday after posting bail, which had been set at $97,000.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
