On July 25, 2024, just after 10:00 p.m., Louisiana State Police Troop I was alerted to a deadly collision involving two vehicles on U.S. Highway 90 near Lori Lane. The tragic accident resulted in the deaths of 77-year-old Anthony Peck from Franklin and 58-year-old Betty Hester from Benton, Kentucky.
Initial findings indicate that Marcela Yepes-Restrepo, a 43-year-old from Texas driving a 2019 Kenworth 18-wheeler, was making a U-turn from a center turn lane while heading east on U.S. Highway 90. At that moment, a 2019 Kia Sorento driven by Peck was moving west in the left lane. For reasons still being investigated, the Kia collided with the right side of the 18-wheeler during its turn.
Both Peck and Hester, who was seated in the front passenger seat, sustained fatal injuries and were declared dead at the scene. Two juvenile passengers in the back of the Kia were taken to local hospitals with injuries ranging from moderate to severe. Yepes-Restrepo, who was unscathed, provided a voluntary breath sample, which showed no alcohol, and a standard toxicology test was taken from Peck for further analysis. The crash remains under investigation, and possible charges are still being considered.
UPDATE: KQKI News has confirmed that two individuals lost their lives Thursday night in a vehicle accident involving an 18-wheeler near Patterson. Emergency services were called to the westbound lanes of Highway 90 just before 10:30 p.m. for a two-vehicle crash, including an 18-wheeler.
As of Friday morning, specific details are sparse, but a representative from Louisiana State Police Troop I has confirmed the fatalities. More information will be released as it becomes available.
In addition to Louisiana State Police, responders included Patterson Police Department, St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office, Patterson Volunteer Fire Department, Bayou Vista Volunteer Fire Department, and Acadian Ambulance.
